Dear Comm:

A friend of mine recently told me 'holy crap watari is canonically gay? win.'

Of course, this IS Yami no Matsuei. All the guys are gay by fandom. But. Canonically is another matter entirely considering a close friendship could be mistaken for canon homosexuality. So, I asked for where she heard this.

First, the quote: First of all, it's "King of Swords: Part III", and the only(maybe not only -_-) person that's yaoi is Muraki. Seriously, Yami no mastuei is not "Yaoi Land"!!! A lot of people will attempt to hurt you if you say something like that. I should know, a lot of people love this show and/or manga.

The last manga volume totally had a yaoi scene in it. Too bad they were both unimportant 1-shot characters.... Muraki is the least yaoi chara; only wants Tsuzuki's body so he can restore his brother so he can kill him again & again (plus he already has a girlfriend). The romance star (with Tsuzuki dead center) includes Hisoka, Tatsumi, & the count. Watari accidently blurted out that he he was gay to a girl when they were talking about hair. Tatsumi could easily steal Tsuzuki for himself if he ever gets over his blame-game issues & low self esteem. In fact before the haitus, a group of fans were discussing how Tatsumi & Hisoka could become rivals while Tsuzuki remained oblivious.

Second, link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Descendants_of_Darkness#Ugh.21

Yeah, I know, it's Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not reliable. But I feel the need to pursue the truth! This is the first time I've ever heard of this "moment" so I highly doubt it. But if I have somehow missed it (I don't know how I could have...) then please please correct me. Thank you very much.

The only scene to my knowledge where Watari and 'a girl' are talking about hair is in GenSouKai arc Part 32 (in the middle of Volume 9), when he and Wakaba are bemoaning the weather's effects on their hair. Here is the translation of that section according to theria.net:

[In the employees' office, Watari and Wakaba are moaning about frizzled hair and
the rain outside.]
Watari: "Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh---------... Rainy days are depressing~~~"
Wakaba: "...me too. My hair won't listen to me at all."
Watari: "Falling rain is a bane to people with natural hair like ours..."
Wakaba: "My hair has been like this ever since I woke up this morning------~~~"
Terazuma: "...."
Terazuma: "So just cut it already. Your hair."
Terazuma: "I'm the one whose even more inconvenienced. Idiot."
Watari: "What do you mean 'just cut it'!! Huh, what!!!" You straight-haired
people don't know our pain.

It's possible your friend read 'straight-haired' as 'straight'?
Watari certainly doesn't declare his homosexuality then. In fact, out of the Shinigami, I think Watari is shown to canonically perv on women the most often (albeit usually in a disturbing way).

Not that I don't think he likes men, but Yami as a manga was in complete denial. ^.^

Aw, Kata beat me to it, that's the version I know as well.

I dunno. My former boyfriend, who I made read the series, was... a little weirded out by the homoerotic overtones/suggestions. (Though overall I think he did enjoy it.) I still remember his question (after.. I dunno I think the third or fourth volume maybe) "So um.. is every single character in this gay??"

Me: "Um... just.. read it with the assumption that everyone is at least bisexual, and you'll have less nasty surprises that way." ^^

...And I'd say the Count makes for another 'yaoi' character ^^;;;
